Ellie Goulding, Diplo, and Swae Lee rally romantics on ‘Close To Me’
“Close To Me” is quite weighty, in that Goulding, while avid fans will remember her musing nostalgia over Kygo‘s semi-recent “First Time,” has not released a single of her own in years–three to be exact. Diplo, on the other hand, has been relentlessly doling out releases in and outside of the Major Lazer moniker, with his recent posthumous collaboration with XXXTENTACION and the ever-auspicious, Skrillex, receiving further support from the aforementioned Rae Sremmurd, in fact.
“Close To Me,” with its broody acoustic plucks and fusing of Goulding’s enrapturing entreats with Lee’s breezy rhymes, is technically Goulding and Diplo’s second collaboration to date. The UK singer-songwriter paired with Major Lazer in 2015 for the radio-ravaging and aptly-named “Powerful.” Whether this latest venture is simply a solitary effort, or a harbinger of a yet-to-be-named multi-work project, Goulding fans are surely smitten seeing her back in singing saddles.
