Oliver Heldens takes HI-LO alias for a spin on Mike Cervello-assisted single, ‘Impulse’

Oliver Heldens is never one to stay quiet long, with a slew of fresh future house gems already landing having landed in 2018. Among high-profile remixes for names like David Guetta and Calvin Harris, the producer tagged Dada Life for a deliciously crunchy collab as his HI-LO alias. The track was among the most experimental and unpredictable from the house music don in years, and it looks like his alter-alias out to play again on a new joint effort with Mike Cervello titled “Impulse.”

Arriving on his own HELDEEP imprint, the song is instantly and noticeable and techno than Helden’s usual flavor, a mark of his HI-LO project. The backbone of the record is a fizzing, ascending bass line that adds infectious movement to the relentless four-to-the-floor drums. The breakdown is a playfully chaotic mix of detuned synth blips and crackly vocal samples that gives way to one last turbo-charged beat section. Heldens joins Guetta in his inspired return to past underground roots, with Guetta having unveiled his much buzzed about Jack Back moniker this year as well. HI-LO is a markedly messier and grittier sonic space for Heldens, and the range on display is sure keep fans on their toes.
