Varien sets loose dark and pulsating, ‘Death Asked A Question’
Varien is forever manifesting his self-appointed status as EDM’s “Prince Of Darkness.” The American producer is widely recognized in the electronic realm for his promiscuity in the studio, seamlessly switching from industrial, to metal, to dance music by way of his handful of aliases, all with a quick flip of his highlighted hair tips.
His latest medley of musings, “Death Asked A Question,” reflects on Varien’s “own demons, as well as a way for listeners to better understand their own.” Merging house and electro ingredients, the track drums up images of a club-themed graveyard, where evil and benevolent spirits float fervidly. The vaporous soundscape is equipped with both benignly ambient piano chords and devilish synth stutters.
Finger never far from the trigger, Varien performs and produces under a sundry of aliases, including Nick Kaelar (his real name) and Koinu. His multifarious catalog includes extensive work with stalwart labels like freaky-friendly Monstercat, as well as Spinnin’ and OWSLA.
