Joeski – Mind Funk [EP Review]

Joeski is a household name in the New York dance music sphere. A pioneer of the underground, he helped introduce and proliferate the sounds of house across the city in the early 90s through regular performances at iconic venues which have included the Roxy, Limelight, and beyond, later going on create the Chocolate Factory DJ collective alongside his peers.

Three decades of experience have seen him become the leader of his own label, Maya, in addition to outputting on numerous other prime imprints like Crosstown Rebels, Relief, and Poker Flat. His debut on DIRTYBIRD carries the quintessential Joeski flavor of gritty analog synthesis and scintillating grooves for a veritably urban, classic house feel.

The EP kicks off with “The Sound Like This,” a moody and brooding piece of music with a driving edge to it, while the second original track, “Tha RMX”, builds upon a rolling bass and crisp high hats for a sound that would be right at home on the terrace of DC-10.
