Oakland’s Luniz released “I Got 5 On It,” the lead single from their debut album in the summer of 1995. Nowadays, the duo’s platinum-certified hit is an undisputed stoners’ anthem, soundtracking countless hotboxes over the last two decades. Now though, Jordan Peele‘s upcoming psychological horror film, Us, intends to reinvent the classic Mary Jane jam into a haunting, downtempo suspense builder, as showcased in the film’s thrill ride trailer, released at the end of 2018.

The remix’s name comes from the harrowing doppelgänger figures in the film, known as The Tethered. The original cut’s iconic sleepy Bay Area lyrical flow and famous keys are left largely intact in the intro to the “tethered mix,” though the lyrics are quickly filtered down and almost completely swallowed by bone-chilling strings. The cinematic remix then breaks into hair-raising bass stabs and dramatic percussive accents, making for a spine-tingling take on one of the most recognized West Coast rap cuts of all time. Us, which premiered earlier this month at SXSW, is set for its theatrical release on March 22.
