Myspace lost an entire generation of music in recent server migration
Myspace lost 50 million songs by 14 million artists uploaded between 2004 and 2015 while migrating to a new server, confirmed by sources from the pioneer of social media platforms. The largest social networking platform from 2005 to 2009 hosted many of music’s most iconic acts in the modern era.
Sonny Moore self-released the debut EP under his Skrillex stage name, My Name Is Skrillex, as a free download on Myspace on June 7, 2010. The late Avicii has explained his name means “the lowest level of Buddhist hell,” but the real spelling Avīci was already taken. He would release music off Myspace under his prior pseudonym, Timberman. In 2006, Calvin Harris signed contracts with Three Six Zero Group (management), EMI (publishing) and Sony BMG (recording) after he was discovered on Myspace. Deadmau5 used the popular social media platform for his debut releases to bump his clout in the industry, and let’s not forget Flume.
Other notable artists discovered on the platform include Soulja Boy, Lil B, Panic! At the Disco, Arctic Monkeys, Janelle Monáe, and many more. It’s been advised to backup files, showing even some of the biggest corporations can be at risk for precious data loss.
