Psytrance DJ Perplex murdered while playing at a Mexican nightclub, four others injured

On the morning of June 29, a group of armed assailants opened fire at a rave in San Luis Potosí, Mexico—killing two people and injuring four others. One of the victims was Haifa native Ronen Dahan, also known as DJ Perplex. The Israeli DJ had been performing throughout Mexico for most of the month and was playing the show when the shooting occurred. He was 45 years old.

According to local reports, the shooting was linked to ongoing cartel violence in the country. Dahan did not appear to have targeted. Since news of his death, numerous fans and loved ones have expressed their feelings of loss on Dahan’s Facebook page.

As an artist, Dahan had produced 13 albums under different aliases and embarked on a few worldwide tours. He was also one half of the Psytrance duo Pura Vida alongside Daniel Zitrin, also known as Minimize.

Dahan’s cousin Emily Ben Hamo said Dahan’s music had not caught on in Israel yet, despite gaining international popularity playing parties. “He always wanted to come back to Israel and make it big playing his music here,” Hamo said.

Fellow DJs the Faders have started a fundraising campaign to help bring Dahan’s body back to his hometown to give him a proper funeral and burial. Learn more below.
