RL Grime takes home $1 million prize at Fortnite World Cup, donates to ACLU

Epic Games’ highly anticipated Fortnite World Cup took place at New York’s Arthur Ashe Stadium from July 26-28. The event saw tens of thousands of attendees gather to watch the best Fortnite players in the world descend upon a single place to compete for over $30 million in prize money. In addition to the Pro competition, which resulted in 16-year old player ‘Bugha’ taking home $3 million for winning, Epic brought back its popular celebrity Pro-Am tournament. The Pro-Am features celebrities and professional Fortnite players paired as ‘duos’ to compete together. The game involves 100 players being dropped onto an island and competing until there is one person remaining.

The Fortnite Pro-Am took place for the first time in 2018 at E3 in Los Angeles, which resulted in Marshmello and Ninja stealing the number one spot. Electronic music artists continue to rise to the top during the Pro Am, with none other than RL Grime and pro Fortnite player Airwaks taking home the Pro Am prize for their second time in 2019. The duo first won at Fortnite’s Summer Block Party, and they have now won again at the World Cup. Although neither RL Grime or Airwaks were the last standing during the Fortnite World Cup celebrity Pro-Am, they won due to a combined 52 points from scoring kills.

Thanks to their win, $1 million dollars will be split between two charities or RL Grime and Airwaks’ choosing. RL Grime has chosen the American Civil Liberties Union as his recipient, and Airwaks has chosen World Wildlife.
