Alicia Keys to host the Grammy Awards for second consecutive year
The Recording Academy has called Alicia Keys back for an encore, announcing that the superstar crooner will return to host the Grammy Awards for the second year in a row.
“At first I did think last year was a one-time thing, but when the opportunity came back around there was no question about returning as host of the Grammy Awards. Last year was such a powerful experience for me. Not only did I feel the love in the room—I [also] felt it from around the world and it confirmed the healing and unifying power of music,” said Keys in a statement.
At the 2019 Grammy Awards ceremony, Keys enthralled audience members at the Staples Center and home viewers alike with her live performance of a genre-spanning medley of songs, including Ella Mai’s “Boo’d Up” and her own JAY-Z-assisting smash, “Empire State of Mind.”
Another memorable moment of Keys’ 2019 hosting stint involved storied guitarist, John Mayer. Mayer joined Keys on stage with a halved Grammy award in his hand.
“I have been super blessed to win 15 Grammys,” Keys told those in attendance. “And in 2004, I dreamed about winning Song Of The Year for ‘If I Ain’t Got You.’ So when my hero, Stevie Wonder, opened up that card and started to read in braille, I just knew he was going to feel my name.” The name that Wonder felt: John Mayer. Mayer won the award for his soft pop hit from Heavier Things, “Daughters,” but in feeling that the honor should have gone to Keys, split the Grammy, wrote the title of Keys’ song on her half, and gifted it to her.
“We’re putting it back together, it belongs together,” Keys said, as Mayer chimed in with a, “for one night only.”
The 62nd annual Grammy Awards will be broadcast live from Los Angeles on January 26.
