M.I.A. hints at new music for a new decade, launches Patreon account

M.I.A. is setting her intentions strong in this new decade, promising to explore “new planets and platforms” in 2020.

Of course, the primary takeaway from this expansive statement is that there is new material coming from the crossover pop star, and it’s just around the corner. On January 31, M.I.A. launched her own Patreon account—a membership-based plaform that allows fans and followers to subscribe to and support creators in different pricing increments.

In a press release, the Sri Lankan emcee explains,

“I’m doing a Patreon, because I make so much stuff and record so many things that aren’t music and don’t fit on other platforms. I’ve tried all the other platforms and it’s like: this one is too mean and hateful, this one is too fake and self-obsessed, and this one just sells all your data to Cambridge Analytica…Hopefully, this one is going to be just right.”

M.I.A. has been mostly quiet since her last album, AIM, came out in 2016. There was one single in 2017, “P.O.W.A.,” but a 2020 release date would fit her common trend of waiting three or four years for a new album release.
