Artists earned more than $4 million on Bandcamp revenue share day

With the COVID-19 pandemic affecting industries and creatives of all trades, several organizations stepped up in swift response. In the music industry, one that has put together a particular applaudable plan of action and united the community in supporting artists and musicians has been Bandcamp. On March 20, the company waived its revenue shares for 24 hours in an effort to support artists. It resulted in Bandcamp’s biggest sales day in its history with $4.3 million spent on music, as announced by the platform.

During Bandcamp’s revenue share day, fans purchased nearly 800,000 items of music and merch in comparison to an average Friday of 47,000 items. The campaign drew listeners to buy more than 15 times the normal amount, at a whooping peak rate of 11 items per second.

We don’t yet know the long-term impact of Covid-19, but we know that we all need music—to uplift and inspire us, to heal us, and to give us hope,” stated Bandcamp on their post.
