Amoeba Records launches GoFundMe to stay afloat amid COVID-19 lockdowns

Amoeba Records‘ esteem and landmark status as a staple of music culture extends well beyond the West Coast. Some may have heard stories from the legendary shop, others know Amoeba from their popular What’s In My Bag? series on YouTube. However music fans are familiar, it’s likely the independent record business has made some impact on them. Now, as Amoeba faces it’s hardest financial times to date, ownership is looking for community support to keep the vinyl vault afloat.

Amoeba Records is seeking to raise $400,000 through GoFundMe to help them weather the financial storm brought on by COVID-19. In the first day or fundraising, donors gave over $100,000 to help keep the three Amoeba locations in Berkeley, San Francisco, and Los Angeles afloat.

“So, we most humbly ask for your help. We know that this is a very difficult and uncertain time for everyone, and we understand that there are many individuals and organizations in need. If you are in a position to help us, we would be incredibly grateful to receive that support. Any donation to this campaign will contribute to the cash resources we need to deal with the immediate future, to take care of our staff of over 400 Amoebites, and to allow Amoeba to continue operations…

Though, we’re dark now, Amoeba is still there, waiting for the day when our doors can be opened again to welcome everyone back inside to celebrate the joy of what moves our souls the most: Music.”
