Evoke the ’70s inflection of 2017’s embraced Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 1, the retro leanings of “Blinding Lights” and even After Hours at large, and The Weeknd‘s ever-smooth vocal execution, and you’ll have “Over Now,” the very first Calvin Harris output since 2019’s Rag ‘n’ Bone Man assist, “Giant.” A welcome departure from the underground sonic expeditions cataloged under Harris’ Love Regenerator alias, “Over Now” closes the just over one-year gap between Harris’ last and latest with funky finesse.

The Weeknd-crooned, ballad-style farewell cut piqued the interest of Harris’ following when he previewed the soon-to-be-released single on his Instagram story on August 20. Although it remained momentarily unclear whether “Over Now” would be an extension of Love Regenerator’s 2020 release activity, listeners called for the cut’s release, no matter the name to which it would be credited.

Now, just over one week since Harris initially teased the single, “Over Now” has landed in the hands of Harris followers across the globe, whetting their appetites for the Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 1 sensibilities that Harris exudes on the one-off. Whether the rumors are true and “Over Now” indeed hails from the Motion album-maker’s forthcoming studio album under his primary project? That’s yet to be determined—for now, at least.
