Damon Albarn teases Gorillaz film in the works, hints at new album, ‘Plastic Beach 2’

Gorillaz frontman Damon Albarn says an animated Gorillaz film is in the works and Netflix has agreed to release it. Via Radio.com as part of their New Arrival series, Albarn confirmed a second slate of Song Machine singles are on the way and there will be a feature film to go along with the two-decade long tradition of animated shorts. Albarn said of the development of the movie,

“Well, we are supposed to be making a film while we’re doing season two of [Song Machine]. We signed contracts, we’ve begun scripts and stuff. Making an animated film that’s kind of abstract is quite a big risk for a movie studio because they’re very expensive. If you’re telling a slightly obtuse story that only sometimes makes any sense, it’s quite difficult. That’s what we’ve discovered.”

When questioned about the band’s 2010 LP, Plastic Beach and a potential follow-up, Albarn was a little more tight-lipped, though he did say,

“I think sadly, more than ever the need to keep reminding people that we need to change our habits; to somehow help our climate is really necessary. So maybe I need to revisit it, really. I don’t think we can ever leave ‘Plastic Beach.’ I’d like to just have an album called ‘Clean Beach,’ but at the moment it’s still ‘Plastic Beach.’ So ‘Plastic Beach 2’ is a nice idea for me creatively but it’s also really depressing… but it’s necessary.”

The news comes after releasing the long-awaited 17-track deluxe album, Song Machine: Season One—Strange Timez which featured an extensive list of collaborators including slowthaiSkeptaBeckScHoolboy QSt. VincentJPEGMAFIA, Tony Allen, Elton JohnEARTHGANG, and several more.
