Good Morning Mix: Prepare for RL Grime’s ‘Halloween IX’ with the series’ originator

Even in a year as erratic as 2020, RL Grime was surely not letting Halloween come and go without an annual addition to his legendary holiday series. To corral some accessory anticipation in the eight days preceding the trap maven’s forthcoming ninth Halloween treat, due on October 29, we decided to turn back the clock and revisit the yearly tradition in its entirety, starting in 2012.

It’s safe to say that dance music was in a much different place when the first Halloween mix introduced itself on Halloween eight years ago. RL Grime was just getting his footing, with his “Mercy” remix alongside Salva still at full tilt from the summer, and his original Clockwork brand still holding the reigns as he made his way towards his current household name standing. Of course, at the time, RL Grime had no idea what would become of his future holiday custom, but the 33-minute debut promptly solidified the “Halloween” series, powering through hip-hop and trap’s best from 50 Cent, TNGHT, Kid Ink, Kendrick Lamar, and Three 6 Mafia, while providing a look into RL’s then-unreleased High Beams EP.
