Good Morning Mix: RL Grime hones his craft on ‘Halloween IV’ with cuts by Baauer, Djemba Djemba, Chief Keef, and more

2015—firmly within trap music’s golden moment, and four years into his hair-raising Halloween mix series, RL Grime can’t seem to stop one-upping himself. By then, with three previous mixes under his belt, Henry Steinway was already anointed a trap deity at the top of his game, though, rather than slow even slightly, he keeps his foot floored on the gas pedal for his fourth, landing as one of the series’ most memorable installments to date. So throw on a black crewneck, a gold chain if you’ve got one, and a good pair of headphones and strap into “Halloween IV” as we inch closer to the series’ ninth installment later this month.

When the mix opens with a voicemail from comedian Hannibal Buress claiming he’s ready to be, “Chicago’s Avicii,” you know the rest of the session is about to be hot fire. Grime spends the hour lacing together golden era trap hallmarks from Mr. Carmack, Baauer, Djemba Djemba, Shlohmo, Hudson Mohawke, and more, accenting the mix with his own works and highlights from A$AP Rocky, Chief Keef, Sophie, and others. Of course RL Stine stops by for his annual spooky tidings in the mix’s outro as well. From Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs to The Weeknd, with Drake, Alexander Lewis, Future, and more in between, RL Grime’s mixing chops never fail to disappoint, and “Halloween IV” might be one of the trap lord’s finest outings to date.

Now, as 2020’s mix installment approaches, things for Steinway look a little different than they did when “IV” landed. No longer bound to the sonics of 2014’s genre-defining VOID LP, a labelhead marching his fledging Sable Valley imprint forward, and perhaps a generally more seasoned electronic factotum altogether, RL Grime’s next Halloween mix might reflect a more refined tastemaking perspective—though he’ll always undoubtedly be the king of Halloween and the undisputed god of trap.

Dancing Astronaut will continue to revisit each installment of RL Grime’s “Halloween” series daily leading up to the arrival of “Halloween IX” on October 29. Follow the journey with our RL Grime Good Morning Mix series.
