MGMT offer new psychedelic twist on Django Django’s ‘Spirals’
In a formidable union of two mainstay bands, MGMT have unveiled a new remix of Django Django‘s single, “Spirals.” The American rock outfit’s offering takes the tune on a nearly-eight minute journey, landing alongside an equally mind-altering visual companion, directed by Gemma Yin. Released in September, “Spirals” marks Django Django’s sole single of the year as well as their first track in two years.
Transforming the art rock song into a sprawling psychedelic landscape, MGMT carefully inject electronic production in their reimagining, capitalizing on the original’s alternative essence while delivering a dramatic structural makeover. Buzzing synths and crescendoing arpeggiators introduce the mix-in, spotlighting drums and vocals before siphoning off into hypnotic breakdowns. Filtered effects and synapse-tingling layers course throughout the tune, breathing life-like momentum into the experimental approach. Both versions champion rock modernism, yet present their own distinct esoteric flavors.
