Good Morning Mix: Celebrate Daft Punk’s legacy by revisiting the visionaries’ 1997 Essential Mix

It’s true: everyone hates Monday mornings, and February 22 made for a particularly unsettling opener to week when Daft Punk abruptly took to their YouTube channel to post “Epilogue,” an eight-minute video that ended with the news of their heart-shattering retirement. It seems only fitting that we take a trip down memory lane to revisit the French icons’ 1997 Essential Mix, where the pioneering duo demonstrated its mastery in all things house and disco across two consecutive hours of inundated 90’s mixing.

Released nearly 25 years ago, Daft Punk’s first Essential Mix represents a simpler time for the robo-electronic outfit, predating eternal releases like Discovery, Random Access Memories, and Alive 2007 by years, if not decades. Although more recent live performances, particularly the aforementioned Alive 2007 set, focus on the raw electro power and musical synergy of the group’s more contemporary productions, their Essential Mix debut falls closer to the realm of two music junkies experimenting with new sounds and just throwing down some of their personal favorites.
