MAVV’s melodic penchant is ever-present on ‘When I Had You’ [Stream]

After setting out on an electronic course in 2019 via “Now and Again,” MAVV, an emergent force to be reckoned with in the melodic bass landscape, continues to provide steady justification for just why his name should be present on streamers’ radars. The latest example comes in the form of “When I Had You,” MAVV’s 12th all-time release, issued via Blanco Y Negro’s Spitfire Music.

Music for melodic indulgement, “When I Had You” features Rory Hope, whom the Texan worked alongside to cultivate a specific sonic aim in the single’s three-minute and four-second span. MAVV remarked,

“I wanted to bring soft chords to life with the energy of a build into a glitch fill before the drop to emulate the emotional pattern that we’ve all experienced in the face of loss, as if the glitch fill was the embodiment of what went wrong, but can’t ultimately be changed.”

As MAVV technically translated this thematic idea to the single’s arrangement, he and Hope sought to do the same on the lyrical end, merging creative sensibilities for the one-off, available below.
