Tom Morello, The Bloody Beetroots join forces for ‘The Catastrophists’ EP, enlist Pussy Riot and more on ‘Radium Girls’

Tom Morello‘s influence and experience around the electronic space is well documented, and The Bloody Beetroots‘ seasoned, punk-powered aesthetic are so complementary, it is a wonder these two veteran forces didn’t team up sooner. Though now, the pair have linked for a joint EP called The Catastrophists, due in full on June 18, dropping off a blistering new single, “Radium Girls,” ahead of the project’s release with a stellar cast of collaborators.

Bringing “Radium Girls” to life is a stacked lineup of exceptional female talent, with Pussy Riot’s Nadya Tolokonnikova, The Interrupters’ Aimee Interrupter, White Lung’s Mish Way, and finally The Last Internationle’s Delila Paz all assisting on the anthemic electro-rock number. Dedicated to the real Radium Girls, female factory workers who contracted radiation poisoning from painting watch faces with glow-in-the-dark paint in the 1920’s, the song holds a special place in Morello’s heart. The Rage Against The Machine guitarist shared in an official release,

“I spent every summer as a kid near Ottawa, Illinois where these doomed girls used deadly radium laced paint to make glow in the dark watches. They were encouraged to lick the paintbrushes to a point to increase productivity and profit and in the end their bones literally fell apart from cancer and they were so toxic they had to be buried in lead lined coffins. The resulting court cases and publicity led to historic nationwide labor protection legislation.”

Giving the term “Radium Girls” new meaning with the powerful new joint effort, the track blends thrashing guitar licks with amped vocal contributions for a certified headbanger ahead of The Catastrophists‘ wide release. See the Morello-directed visual below.
