Wave Racer announces debut LP, shares third album single
2021 bore witness to the triumphant return of Sydney, Australia’s very own Wave Racer. Tom Purcell, the 28-year-old behind the Nintendo-inspired pseudonym, spent the past few years prioritizing self-care and recalibration after a blindingly quick and dramatically steep detour to success at the young age of 21. Wave Racer struggled with foreign pressures and unexpected social anxieties that ultimately led to a much-needed hiatus.
Now, on his own accord, Tom Purcell decided that 2021 would mark the momentous return of his highly influential passion project. Following the release of exceptionally-well received singles “Left Behind” and “What Are We Waiting For,” Wave Racer presents “Look Up To Yourself,” “an anthem honouring the freedom of self-love and the “perils of self-deprecation.” In addition to the single, Purcell has announced and confirmed the September 24 release of Wave Racer’s debut LP, To Stop From Falling Off The Earth. The introspective themes conveyed by Purcell’s recent works will amount to Wave Racer’s freshman album, designed “to tell a story of overcoming anxiety, depression, and isolation.”
To quote the artist, “Look Up To Yourself” is “a reminder that you have to go easy on yourself sometimes, and that it’s always just a matter of perspective. The same way you look up to other people you admire, that needs to be the way you look at yourself.” View the album’s official cover art and stream “Look Up To Yourself” below.
