Blast from the past: About That, Evalina place house spin on ‘Who Let The Dogs Out’

As millennials—or members of the Spice Girls era, as some like to say—know and know well, “Who Let The Dogs Out” was virtually inescapable in the early 2000’s. The Baha Men’s inimitable number was the theme song for the 2000 World Series and, after a bidding war between Nickelodeon and Disney, landed on the former television channel, which sought the song for inclusion in Rugrats in Paris. To put it simply, the Baha Men and “Who Let The Dogs Out” had a chokehold on pop culture, one that would be further cemented by their triumph in the Best Dance Recording field at the 2000 Grammy Awards. That year, the Baha Men beat out Moby (“Natural Blues”), Eiffel 65 (“Blue [Da Ba Dee]”), Jennifer Lopez (“Let’s Get Loud”), and Enrique Iglesias (“Be With You”) to take home the title.

Nearly 22 years later, “Who Let The Dogs Out” continues to prove that its appeal is that of a timeless nature thanks to a house-geared update from elusive UK DJ production pair About That and Evalina. The contemporary, club-minded conversion of the y2K favorite surfaced in English composer Andrew Lloyd Webber’s debut DJ set at a New York block party celebrating reopening night of Broadway’s long-running Lloyd Webber production, The Phantom of the Opera.
