Gryffin makes bucket list collaboration happen with MØ on fourth ‘Alive’ single, ‘Reckless’

Gryffin welcomed his live show back on the first night of Bonnaroo‘s 2022 edition, and those tuned into the Hulu-directed livestream during the early hours of June 17 would’ve come up empty when attempting to Shazam a certain track during his set. There wasn’t any explicit information on who Gryffin’s counterpart was on it—although one of his TikToks seemed to answer that in hindsight—but about a week later, he teased that the fourth single from Alive was en route and it would be a bucket-list pairing. That fill-in-the-blank game has now ended, with Gryffin dropping the collaborative curtain and revealing to be the other half of his sophomore album’s newest tracklist entry, “Reckless.”

Trailing “You Were Loved” with Ryan Tedder, the album title number with Calle Lehmann, and “Caught Up” with Olivia O’Brien, “Reckless” adds another high-profile collaborator to the Alive tracklist and had been something Gryffin had always strived to make happen. Gryffin’s 2017 rework of MØ and Snakehips’ “Don’t Leave” still presides as a fan-favorite—especially in ours—in his discography and considering how well his production matched up with MØ’s vocals, a proper one-two punch between them was meant to be. “Reckless” is decisively a change of pace from the more four-on-the-floor showings from Alive thus far, but Gryffin and MØ opted for an indie-electronic, summer-soaked release that couldn’t have come at a better time with the season just starting. With the first Gryffin’s Alive headlining appearance at Brooklyn Mirage in August, we’ll just have to hold on for more concrete details about the album’s arrival, which is confirmed to include an unreleased Blanke meeting, “Colors.” Gryffin explained how he’d been longing to work with MØ and what they aimed to achieve with “Reckless,” stating,

I’m so excited to share Reckless with you all. MØ has been one of my favorite artists of all time, and I’ve always wanted to work on a song with her so this is a huge life goal achievement for me. This song has been 2 years in the making, and we finally felt like we nailed it.  We wanted to make a song that was a pure spirited, summery, feel good vibe and couldn’t be happier with how it turned out.  Play this one loud with the windows rolled down.”
