Laidback Luke, Gian Varela are right on trend with Latin-infused ‘Ponme Loco’
House and tech-house have been a hotbed for Latin influence of late, and Laidback Luke and Gian Varela’s “Ponme Loco” (English translation: “Get Me Crazy”) is the latest Latin/tech-house fusion to shake up dance floors. Their first-ever collaboration is the outcome of crossing paths during Miami Music Week 2022. “[Varela’s] energy and vibe works perfectly for team and I. He came to us with a bag of demos, and I felt ‘Ponme Loco’ was the perfect fit for me,” Laidback Luke said.
Though “Ponme Loco” adds sonic diversity to the Dutchman’s catalog, for Varela, it lives right in his wheelhouse. The Panamanian producer is reputed for his work alongside preeminent Latin artists, including El Chombo and Fein. With experience performing across South America and the United States, Varela’s sound has taken on an increasingly global character that’s audible on “Ponme Loco.”
Says Varela, “Making dance music in Spanish is just one part of it. It’s bringing one’s culture through the sounds, melodies and ideas where these fusions really get their fire. Starting with Mexico, stopping in Panama, and going all the way down to Argentina: the Latin culture is so big and there’s still so much to explore and fuse. Possibilities are endless and when combined with other world cultures, you end up with a global sound.”
