In 2022, English duo CamelPhat have made their presence felt in the dance/electronic music events circuit, from headlining shows at The Warehouse Project in Manchester and Wembley Arena in London to a summer residency at Ushuaïa in Ibiza. Dancing Astronaut sat down CamelPhat’s Dave Whelan and Mike Di Scalla before their July 19 Ushuaïa show to talk “Believe,” their first single since 2020’s Dark Matter, more music to follow—including another LPand taking over the White Island this summer.

When did you first starting working on “Believe” with Mathame, and how did this collaboration come about?

CamelPhat: “We passed a few ideas to each other and then after some time, that was the one that was agreed upon. We started it in the latter part of last year. I think they they just sent the idea across as a demo. Obviously, we just saw the potential and then, they sent all the stems and we put down the synths—or the idea of the synth anyway—the melodies and all that, and then we just beefed it up and rearranged it.”

“Believe” is your first single since the release of Dark Matter. What can you tell readers about what else is in your pipeline?

CamelPhat: “We’ve got new material coming with Anyma on Afterlife. There is a vocal on it, funnily enough. That comes in September. Tale Of Us have been playing it to get in a good reaction.

We’ve done a track with Shimza, which we just need to work out. We don’t really want to be putting too much out because we are on the back of the album, plus we are working on the new album as well. We’re not too far away from it, and that’s why we’ve been a little bit held back with the releases.”

How has the Ushuaïa residency been going? Playing on a Tuesday must be nice in that it leaves the weekends free for festivals.

CamelPhat: “It’s gaining momentum. Everybody’s getting stronger, more people are coming through the door, the Island’s getting busier at the same time. This is like the prime time now; July into August is when all the Brits arrive. So we’ll be seeing a real big big party every Tuesday for the next like, six to eight weeks. Fingers crossed.”
