Lastlings’ post-‘First Contact’ era commences with ‘Get What You Want’

Sonically, the post-First Contact era promises to be as supple a period as the past two years for Lastlings. Following the release of their debut album, First Contact, via RÜFÜS DU SOL‘s Rose Avenue Records in 2020, the Japanese-American brother-sister duo, included among Dancing Astronaut‘s Artists to Watch in 2021, emerged as one of the dance/electronic genre’s most compelling fledgling acts. Tracks from the LP ricocheted from marquee playlists on digital streaming platforms to Lastlings’ own live performances to fellow producers’ live sets. The result: First Contact enjoyed a unique but oft-sought traction that invariably sets a high bar for what is to follow. And if “Get What You Want” is any indication, Lastlings aren’t in the business of just meeting that bar, but rather, further elevating it. That’s precisely the effect achieved by “Get What You Want,” Lastlings’ first true original production of the post-First Contact span.

Amy and Josh Dowdle of Lastlings are characteristically poised and cerebral on the release, a delicate marriage of piano chords, vocals, and synths that derives its impact from its equilibrium. On its accompanying music video, the single’s airy ebb and flow goes audiovisual. The nimble package of wintry imagery and fluid choreography seamlessly extends the aesthetic that Lastlings foundationally set in 2020.

Lyrically, “Get What You Want”—co-produced by Alex Metric—”explores mental health and the relationship I have with myself,” says Amy. “It’s about putting myself out there and not letting doubt get in the way of what I truly want. ‘I’ve got a lot of enemies that live inside my head’. This song isn’t about love for another person, it’s about my relationship with myself. ‘You’ refers to a darker version of myself that I am trying to fight and overcome.”
