ILLENIUM delivers unexpected take on Taylor Swift’s ‘Anti-Hero’

Seeing the names ILLENIUM and Taylor Swift in the same sentence was likely something no one could’ve ever predicted. But in the year of 2022, one thing is clear and it’s that anything goes. Swift had been already been offering up dance-ready spins of Midnights cuts in recent weeks—with Jayda G and Kungs being the last two remixers—and she brought in Dancing Astronaut‘s 2021 Artist of the Year for the album’s latest undertaking.

The existence of an ILLENIUM remix of “Anti-Hero” sent an already fragile Twitter into a deeper state of chaos, with Swift offering a 12-hour exclusive purchase of it through her website. But in fitting Midnights fashion, it joined streaming platforms a half-day later on November 18 after allowing everyone a brief amount of time to digest the A-list crossover that had just happened. ILLENIUM’s “Anti-Hero” version marks his second non-original of the year after breaking a near four-year remix hiatus back in April with his reimagining of Nirvana’s “Something In The Way.” And he gave the fan-favorite Midnights cut a classic melodic-bass makeover—reminiscent of “Where’d U Go”—further holding us over while he continues to roll out his unnamed fifth album that will be out sometime in 2023.
