Sultan + Shepard reveal new This Never Happened album, share first ‘Forever, Now’ preview with Tishmal
The Something, Everything successor has a name, date, and release location. When Sultan + Shepard posted their Spotify Wrapped graphic at the end of November, they alluded to the fact that something king-sized would be revealed sooner than later. But no one could have realistically anticipated it being the follow-up to their This Never Happened album that ultimately found itself in the middle of Dancing Astronaut‘s Top Albums of 2021. It’s happening, though, with Sultan + Shepard dropping the bombshell announcement of the existence of Forever, Now—following the same title style as their sophomore LP—which is currently scheduled for February 17.
Split up into four sides, Forever, Now will see Sultan + Shepard begin their new year with 11 tracks, including collaborative assistance from Julia Church, Tishmal, Andrew Belle, Benjamin Roustaing, and Delhia de France. But there won’t have to be a wait until mid-February to hear what Sultan + Shepard had been working on in the near two years since Something, Everything. That first preview of their junior album comes in the form of “Losing Ground” with Tishmal, with the duo explaining that the musical synergy between them and Tishmal was palpable from the get go. And “Losing Ground” was born out of a two-day writing session where Sultan + Shepard decided it could’ve only been the maiden look into Forever, Now. There’s only four lines of lyrics, but they explained that Tishmal’s angelic work felt poetic in sense, providing both “an incredible depth” and “simplicity” on top of Sultan + Shepard’s sedative backdrop of melodic-house that already confirms the album will be something to look forward to in 2023. Sultan + Shepard shared a message alongside the broadcast of their impending album, explaining,
“The concept of “Forever, Now” grew out of a familiar feeling of being grounded in a place of creativity, despite being in new places sonically and physically. We realized that wherever we went, there we were. Things were always moving and changing, as we ourselves were too. But through the act of being sincere in expressing our emotions, a sense of being in just the right place or hitting just the right note would often arise. This album is a dive into that place of timelessness, a place where we can just be ourselves in each moment. We can’t for you to hear it. Love, Ossama and Ned.”
