Flume surprise drops album’s worth of unreleased material, ‘Things Don’t Always Go The Way You Plan’

Back in November, Flume celebrated a decade of his self-titled debut album with the release of a demo from 2014, which he uncovered after finding and restoring his old laptop. And he immediately followed it up by saying “there’s more.” Exactly three months later, he’s keeping his promise with Things Don’t Always Go The Way You Plan.

As fittingly titled as imaginable, Things Don’t Always Go The Way You Plan unearths 10 tracks—each labeled with the year it was finalized—from the Flume archives, spanning a timeframe between 2012 and 2020. After sharing an image 24 hours earlier of a cluttered desktop with countless project files, Flume followed through with a nostalgia-loaded delivery of signature future bass that stands behind Palaces on his musical timeline.

In Flume’s release post, he explained that it had been “ten years since his first record came out, since then [he’s written] a lot a lot music and not all of it has seen the light of day. After seeing the reaction to Slugger 1.4 and how much love it got, [he] figured it would be fun to release more of these forgotten ideas from [his] old laptops. The whole process has been quite cathartic.” That’s officially come to life with 10 classic-sounding IDs that can be streamed below, which also comes with the announce of a 10 Years of Flume celebration show at the Kia Forum on May 5.
