John Summit, Hayla tap GRiZ for first official rework of ‘Where You Are’

The first official remix of John Summit and Hayla‘s debatable track of the year frontrunner has arrived. Summit had previously teased that the “Where You Are” remixes would begin rolling out one by one, and he channeled a touch of JVHN SVMMIT for its first rework, tapping in GRiZ, with other remixes from Gorgon City, Hardwell, Zedd, and others also on the way.

Landing just days ahead of his surprise announcement that he’ll be taking a break starting this fall, GRiZ adds his signature touch to a fan-favorite song of both dance music enthusiasts and listeners beyond the genre. While “Where You Are” has had countless adaptations, GRiZ’s is the first that’s officially endorsed by Summit, showcasing his classic bass sound and adding a taste of wonky beats and uplifting melodies. Many may remember its debut during Summit’s The Caverns show a couple of months back, with Summit also bringing it to EDC Las Vegas as well as his first of three nights at The Brooklyn Mirage Speaking on his remix of “Where You Are,” GRiZ delved into his process behind crafting his version of the track and how the original inspired him, explaining,

“‘Where You Are’ is an absolute anthem of a song. It made me feel so warm and euphoric when I first heard it that I immediately went to my studio and ripped the acapella of the vocals and made a version of it – really just for myself. I wanted to hear it the way I heard it in my head. I felt really inspired, so the main chunk of it I made in just a few hours. Then I really took my time finishing the song and making it sound good. So blown away by the response to it. I hope it makes your soul feel beautiful.”

The release of GRiZ’s remix preceded a monumental announcement, who announced on Tuesday that a final performance in October he would be taking an indefinite time off from touring and the GRiZ project, citing a desire to spend more time with friends and family and take a break from the hectic lifestyle of a touring artist. GRiZ expressed his plans to travel, write music, find new inspiration, and evolve into a new headspace. GRiZ’s annual events such as Space Camp, GRiZMAS and his New Year’s show will not be taking place this year. For now, there are still multiple GRiZ appearances on the horizon—including a monumental three sets at Electric Zoo in September—and his remix of “Where You Are” can be streamed below.
