Ben Pearce builds on the buzz with inaugural three-track stint of 2014 [EP Review]

Over the past twelve months, Ben Pearce has gone through considerable motions for a British house breakthrough. He’s took the reign of prime time TV advertisement and some of Europe’s grandest nightspots alike, now returning seamlessly to the digital market with the latest EP for his homegrown Purp & Soul imprint.

Compared to that of infamous RTA chart-hit “What I Might Do,” Pearce’s guise for the ‘Lego EP’ takes things back to the club floor for the label’s inaugural strike of 2014. The EP’s namesake drives deep grooves and hypnotic bass surges into the equation, giving a take on tech house far more suited to the market’s house-favoring taste buds of late. Second riser “GBH” is more ‘chunk’ than ‘funk,’ verging towards the sinister and hypnotic sounds of techno before pulling back with an infectious house undercurrent. As “The Rain Is Coming” summons the most melodically stimulated peak in Pearce’s return to the mother ship, there is little confusion as to where the priorities lie for the British favorite. If you ever doubted underground stamina in the wake of playing soundtrack to a Tesco advert, Ben Pearce returns with all guns blazing and more devastatingly collected than ever before in 2014.
