Dark and stormy is the best way to describe Ta-ku's inventive rerub of "Weight in Gold."
The latest spark of genius to emerge from LA's innovative music scene, Gallant, just earned himself a pretty serious co-sign from Zane Lowe.
Gallant follows up his Mind of a Genius debut "Open Up" with a grim and powerful sophomore single. "Talking In Your Sleep" moves just as purposefully as "Open Up," with drawn out saws and Codeine-laced percussion produced by Stint. While the soulful color of "Open Up" may have been replaced with a more morose canvas, Gallant's R&B chops are still in full force, serenading a discarded lover with stunning falsettos and cries of "Have you given up already?"
The team behind ZHU are unveiling their latest future-forward music project, Gallant. After signing with Mind of a Genius and disappearing for over a year, the R&B soulman returns with his most impressive work to date. "Open Up" whispers and howls with a smoky, lo-fi buzz, as if it were a near-future dystopian dream. Feedback warps and bends against Gallant's pleas for honesty from a dishonest love, his voice trudging through a sea of synthetic quicksand of his own design. It's as atmospheric as his previous work, 2014's Zebra -- just with a year's worth of polish and a bit more purpose. Gallant has much more planned for 2015 and "Open Up" is just the tip of the production iceberg he's spent the last year in solitude creating.
