KSHMR honors grandfather in his new single, ‘Underwater’ [STREAM]

Debuted early at Ultra Music Festival’s Mexico edition last weekend, KSHMR‘s latest single, a collaboration with Bollywood phenomenon Sonu Nigam, has officially debuted on the Indo-American DJ’s Dharma imprint. While the track, titled “Underwater,” is an expansion of the Dharma label, the single holds additional familial significance.

“Underwater has a really beautiful story to it,” KSHMR noted of the collab, “When my friend from India…met me in Amsterdam he asked me to find out my grandfather’s favorite singer. My grandfather’s answer was Sonu Nigam.” As fate would have it, KSHMR’s inquiring friend happened to know Nigam, and arranged a meeting for producer and vocalist. The duo discussed the idea of joining forces for a dance track, reconvening in August in Los Angeles, where the pair finished the song in a single day.

“This song is special, not only because it represents the start of my career as KSHMR,” KSHMR stated, “but it is also a gift to my grandfather who has been so instrumental in both my personal and musical journey.”

“Underwater” signals somewhat of a different aesthetic direction for KSHMR, known for his layering of traditional Indian melodies and stylistic flourishes into his music. KSHMR does not indulge this style of production on “Underwater”, moving instead towards a more progressive sound garnished with big room notes. And yet, the altered stylistic approach proves fruitful, leading KSHMR to produce yet another single of its own distinct sound.
