Skrillex takes you behind the scenes in new documentary
“When people are being themselves and creating something awesome and revolutionary and it catches a buzz, that’s when it changes the world.”
And that is exactly what Skrillex has done. The story is quite amazing, really — how one kid from Los Angeles put dance music on his back and dominated the American scene at such an astronomical speed. Soon the rest of the world would follow. After a few short years amidst a never-ending schedule of label responsibilities, constant touring, a pair of marquee collaboration side projects, and a handful of Grammys, Sonny Moore singlehandedly changed the course of electronic dance music. He has undoubtedly proven that when creativity is the catalyst, the possibilities are endless. Enter the Mothership.
In a new Redbull produced mini-documentary Let’s Make A Spaceship, which premiered during Austin City Limits‘ second weekend, Skrillex and his core team of creative masterminds take us behind the scenes to show not only how the 25-foot juggernaut tour weapon was created, but what actually goes into a Skrillex show night after night. The documentary begins well before Coachella, where the extraterrestrial spacecraft made its debut, bringing fans into the experience from the moment concept sketches hit the notepads to the idea’s fruition. The documentary details the journey through the Takeovers Tour where Skrillex hit the ground running after a relative hiatus in 2013, all the way through Coachella, highlighting each one of the crucial moving parts in the astoundingly intricate process behind a Skrillex live performance.
Perhaps the most engaging element of the 36 minute feature, however, is actually found in the up-close-and-personal vantage point by which fans can observe Sonny’s unrelenting perfectionist disposition. An unparalleled desire to push the limit, matched with a boundless imagination and a fearless team of creative supporters is ultimately how Skrillex created one of the most extraordinarily breathtaking live shows in dance music.
