CNN explores the reason for the explosion of EDM
As part of CNN’s Ones to Watch content series, the news agency explores the explosive rise of EDM and attempts to identify the catalysts for the explosion by interviewing the biggest names of the movement. On the ground at this past summer’s TomorrowWorld CNN interviews David Guetta, Tiesto, Steve Aoki and Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, and details the phenomena that is now a $6.2 billion dollar industry.
Tiësto discusses how got his start back in the days of vinyl, when DJing as an art form was part musical selection part scavenger hunt; “Back then, first of all, we all played vinyl records, so even when you knew the track, you could not get it. Everything was very exclusive.”
Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike attribute much of their success to social media explaining how they got their first gig; “All we did for one year is talk to DJs by Facebook and somehow that got us our first gig. Social media has been the biggest factor in our career.”
Aoki’s path to success was quite different, starting in rock music before he jumped into electronic and developed his ridiculous stage persona; “When they get caked in the face, the first thing they do is immediately turn around to make sure that everyone else saw that they got caked, it’s a very bizarre thing. People don’t get it.”
When asked the million dollar question about whether or not EDM lost its magic when it went mainstream, David Guetta responds stoically as always; “Every musical genre starts from the underground, then it becomes a trend, then it becomes popular, and then one day it dies or it is reinvented.”
