Josh Wink’s legendary Philadelphia-based Ovum Recordings has been on a tear lately, recently releasing huge techno thumpers from Harry Romero and Ambivalent, while also maintaining diversity in sound by putting out a beautiful downtempo record from Ben Hoo. For their next release, Ovum has tapped Israeli producer Yotam Avni for his label debut, and the producer delivers heat as expected, following up on excellent releases for Phil Weeks’ Robsoul and Osunlade’s Yoruba imprints.

The title track from the release, “This Is How,” eases into the groove with a fat kick drum setting the pace before an arresting wispy vocal arrives on the beat. The sultry male vocal repeats “this is how, we always gotta make it like you like” as tension-filled snare rolls enter and fill up the space, with deft synth touches providing additional atmosphere. The track continually builds and ascends, mid-way through dipping into peak-time frenzy with tight synth riffs taking the fore and screeching flourishes pushing the groove to a head. With support already rolling in from all the big players, it marks another stellar release from Ovum, and a welcome debut on the label for Avni.
