Alina Baraz & Galimatias make their live debut

Alina Baraz & Galimatias debuted their Urban Flora album tour at Southern California’s Observatory to a sold-out audience on September 28. The hour-long performance melded the acclaimed cinematic quality of the album with dynamic live components and subtle audio-visual production.

The two artists’ cohesive onstage dynamic was notable, and a bit remarkable given that they collaborated on the album independently. Vocalist Alina Baraz commanded the stage with a veteran presence, despite the fact that the performance marked her first live showcase. Galimatias’ varied live mixing and on-stage drum work brought three-dimensionality to his richly intricate productions, even while bolstering Alina’s powerful live vocals.

The streamlined stage production dovetailed naturally with the duo’s elegant performance. Galimatias synced his launch pad to pulse in time with paper lanterns encircling the stage. The illustrated manifestation of rhythms was essentially the only visual component of the hour-long set, and the effect was enhancing but unobtrusive. The audience reaction, oscillating between rapt attention and unrestrained enthusiasm during finale “Fantasy,” prefigures equally affecting performances throughout the tour.
