DA Premiere: Miike Snow – Genghis Khan (Hook N Sling Remix)
After retreating into the woodwork for several years, Miike Snow are gearing up for a titanic 2016. Four years since the release of their sophomore album, Happy to You, the Swedish trio of Chritian Karlsson, Pontus Winnburg, and singer Andrew Wyatt are slated to release their third LP, iii, this March. Alongside iii, Miike Snow have announced an extensive North American tour, including a coveted spot at Coachella.
Most imminent on the group’s horizon this year is the official remix EP for ‘Genghis Khan,’ iii‘s leading single, due January 29 via Atlantic Records. Miike Snow have already teased official remixes from Louis the Child, CID, Yacht Club., and Empress Of. Dancing Astronaut is proud to premiere the hitherto unreleased revision from Australian producer Anthony Maniscalco, better known as Hook N Sling. Maniscalco is no stranger to the Miike Snow canon, having released a widely-circulated remix of “Gold Dust” from Christian Karlsson’s Galantis side-project last April. “Genghis Khan,” however, marks Hook N Swing’s first partnership with the full outfit since his 2009 remix of “Silvia.”
For his “Genghis Khan” remix, Hook N Sling adheres largely to the original composition. Leaving Wyatt’s vocals largely intact, Maniscalco enlivens the original chord progressions upon a drum-heavy canvas of 128 beats-per-minute. From this baseline, the remix progresses into a whirring electro house frenzy that is equal parts simplistic and frenetic. Hook N Sling’s bass-laden ensemble is accompanied by the understated presence of funk guitar licks and warm piano chords, which are unexpected, but certainly not unwelcome.
