Lane 8 launches new label and phone-free events concept
Producer Daniel Goldstein (aka Lane 8) has won the dance world over with his lush, evocative melodies and mastery of deep, mellow grooves. Now, the American artist has announced plans to take his musical vision even further with the launch of This Never Happened, his own label and events brand geared toward serving as an outlet for his music and a uniquely interactive event experience.
In a world where the act of enjoying moments has become overshadowed with individuals’ needs to capture and share every memory, This Never Happened removes phones and photos from the equation. It’s a personal project for Goldstein, and one centered around ideals he values.
“We live at a time when distractions from reality are never further away than our fingertips. Our phones offer us unlimited stimulation and temporary comfort,” Goldstein wrote in a Facebook post. “The possibilities of technology are endless, but they also limit the possibility…the possibility to truly experience and submit to the moment.”
Goldstein goes on to elaborate on his own club experiences, which centered around letting go of life’s mundane realities and feeling united with fellow fans by a shared desire to experience electronic music and get lost within it.
“Somewhere along the way, we as a society have lost the ability to experience those special moments. On the rare occasion that they do happen, we scramble to grab our phones in time to capture them – but those moments cannot be truly captured – and they don’t need to be broadcasted or recorded. Sometimes, the best thing we can do is fully appreciate what is happening in that room, at that moment, with those people around us,” he wrote. “At This Never Happened, we invite you into a space where the only thing that matters are the people in that room, the music and the magic that happens when those things interact. An event where the dance floor will be a phone and photo-free space.”
This Never Happened’s first event is slated to take place at Mezzanine in San Francisco on June 3. The label itself will launch in May. Listen to Lane 8’s first single on the label below:
