Camo & Krooked feature over 100 tracks in their Essential Mix debut

The opportunity to provide an Essential Mix for BBC Radio 1 is an honor squandered by none. Any act skilled and fortuitous enough to be called up to offer a contribution to the prestigious broadcast is sure to bring the most thoughtfully-curated mix that he, she, or they can conceive. For the series’ first episode of May, Camo & Krooked have put forth the most ambitious Essential Mix debut since Recondite’s in November of 2016.

Where Recondite stood out for his choice to compile a mix consisting entirely of his own music, the Austrian duo have tackled the formidable task of featuring over 100 songs across their two-hour set. Though Camo & Krooked are best known for being influencers in the Drum & Bass scene, their selections are as eclectic as one would expect from a mix of such magnitude. The pair explore far beyond the fast-paced, broken-beat genre, drawing from the likes of Flume, What So Not, and Mura Masa. Delving into the realm of house and techno, the two DJs also feature highlights from artists such as andhim, Stimming, Stephan Bodzin, and Adriatique.

Of course, though Camo & Krooked don’t shy away from musical variation in their BBC offering, they also are true to their form in favoring Drum & Bass. The duo include over 30 of their own originals and remixes and pieces from other major players in the genre, like TC and Dimension. Indeed, one of the mixes many high points comes with its inclusion of Skrillex’s unreleased edit for Dimension’s “UK.”

Regardless of one’s opinions on Drum & Bass, Camo & Krooked’s first step up to bat at the Essential Mix is an eclectic, tasteful home run.
