Weekend Rewind: Revisit Dog Blood’s momentous set at Coachella 2013

Skrillex and Boys Noize redefined the notion of a DJ “supergroup” when they teamed up to form Dog Blood in 2012. The union of the two iconic producers yielded a fusion of electro, techno, bass music, and punk rock which would set the tone for dance music’s harder edge in the years to come. However, much to the chagrin of the duo’s fans, their tenure was as ephemeral as it was electrifying.

Late in April, Dog Blood devotees rejoiced to learn that Sonny Moore and Alex Ridha will be reuniting at this year’s HARD Summer. Given the fleeting existence of the partnership’s inaugural run, this summer’s reprisal will mark the first chance that many fans have to witness Skrillex and Boys Noize’s gritty performance in person. For such fans, the best representation that exists of the duo thus far is the recording of their momentous set from Coachella’s second weekend in 2013.

In 2017, Dog Blood’s performance from the Sahara tent stuns as thoroughly as it did four years ago. Hectic, but calculated, the hourlong set is viscerally stirring, and flush with a soul that is largely lacking in today’s dance music scene – and, indeed, one which was largely lacking at the time as well.

Outside of Dog Blood’s own formidable tracks, the set explores an array of memorable selections. The cerebral mix between Destructo’s then-unreleased classic “Higher” into Alex Metric’s chilling “Prophecies,” the jarring shift from Torro Torro’s popular remix of Wax Motif and Neoteric’s “Go Deep” into Astronomar’s overwhelming take on the track, and the inclusion of Madeon’s vivacious (and still unreleased) “Ubelkeit” all come to mind.

Revisiting Dog Blood’s most accessible performance highlights just how large of a void they left in the dance music community during their hiatus. More importantly, however, it reminds of just how scintillating their live reunion really is. Hopefully, HARD Summer is just the tip of the sanguine iceberg in terms of a larger second chapter in Dog Blood’s legacy.
