Billboard launches two new global charts
On September 14, Billboard announced the creation of two brand new global music charts powered by MRC Data and Nielsen Music. The Billboard Global 200 and Billboard Global Excl. U.S. charts will use global streaming and sales data from more than 200 territories around the world to determine rankings, or in other words, to paint a picture of the most popular songs “on the planet,” according to Billboard.
Rankings will be determined by a weighted formula that canvasses official-only streams on subscription and ad-supported tiers of “leading” digital platforms as well as downloads from “key online music retailers.” The two new charts, based on data from a tracking period spanning September 4 – 10, feature a range of music from the United States, South Korea, and more.
Boasting nearly 101 million streams and more than 23,000 purchases and downloads in the week ending September 10, the No. 1 slot on the debut Billboard Global 200 chart goes to viral Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion hit, “WAP.” Coming in at No. 2 is BTS‘ “Dynamite,” followed closely by 24kGoldn‘s “Mood.”
