Must stream: Crystal Skies, Mazare, & Bertie Scott dispatch ‘Cruel Summer’

American dance duo Crystal Skies has blended future bass colorings with drum ‘n’ bass percussion on its latest collaborative single, “Cruel Summer.” The Insomniac outfit designed the radio-friendly track with Italian producer Mazare, and also enlist alt-pop vocalist Bertie Scott for an enthralling topline. Released via Lost In Dreams of Insomniac Records, “Cruel Summer” marks Crystal Skies’ sixth original offering in 2021. Not to mention, the single also constitutes Crystal Skies’ second career collaboration with Mazare, dating back to 2020’s “Hear Me Now” featuring Luma. In a recent press release regarding the single’s conception, the production pair explained,

“We fell in love with this vocal from the first time we heard it and we knew we wanted to do something special and different with it. We sent it over to Mazare after we got some of the instrumental down and what he sent back was incredible and made it really easy for the inspiration to flow. From that point on it became one of our favorite tracks off of the upcoming album because it was something a little adventurous, fun and out of our comfort zone.”

Known for brightly colored future-bass music, Crystal Skies approached “Cruel Summer” with a tad more aggression. The drum ‘n’ bass grooves layered under Bertie Scott’s impassioned vocal evoke a fast and furious rather than pretty and blissful sound. Crystal Skies’ latest is a surefire secret weapon, fabricated for dance festivals anywhere. A glorious sonic experiment, “Cruel Summer” is now streaming everywhere.
