Thomas Bangalter releases 23-scene score for French ballet, ‘Mythologies’

Almost two years ago—just a few months removed from the abrupt disbandment of Daft Punk—it was revealed that Thomas Bangalter would be responsible for the score of a new ballet. As we had said back then, the opportunity for both halves of Daft Punk to pursue individual work was somewhat of a “silver lining” to the split. And Bangalter had immediately begun to show signs of that on that front, becoming part of Mythologies, a 90-minute ballet choreographed by Angelin Preljocaj that would take place at the Grand Théâtre de Bordeaux in Bordeaux, France. In early January—a year and a half later—Bangalter’s live-only score was given a streaming platform due date in April.

Mythologies is far from Bangalter’s first score work, having already earned a handful of credits across TRON: LegacyIrréversibleRiga, and Climax. But the Mythologies score sees the former Daft Punk half tap into his earliest influences considering his mother was a ballet dancer, with the 23-scene score with the 55-piece Orchestre National Bordeaux Aquitaine—directed by Romain Dumas—helping to bring Bangalter temporarily back into the musical spotlight for an absolutely stunning orchestral performance.
