Aphex Twin to release 13-track EP later this month

Today, Aphex Twin officially announced his followup to Syro: a 13-track EP by the name of Computer Controlled Acoustic Instruments Pt. 2. It’s a weird thing — we had to wait over a decade for his sixth studio album to arrive, yet it will have been just four months since the LP’s release that his next momentous body of work will arrive.

At the same time, however, it doesn’t come entirely as a surprise. Back in September, Richard D. James foreshadowed some post-Syro material in an interview with Pitchfork: “I’ve been doing loads of electro-mechanical stuff with drum robots and things like that,” he said. “I’ve got four MIDI pipe organs and a Disklavier controlled piano and computer-controlled percussion.” With the EP’s title in mind, it seems logical that the “electro-mechanical stuff with drum robots” he’s referring to is the basis for his forthcoming extended release.

Furthermore, James went on to express his fondness for the new tracks: That other material is maybe even better than—well, I prefer it to this album, but I don’t think it’s as accessible. But it’s more unique.” We’ll have to wait but two weeks for the new material to arrive, as Computer Controlled Acoustic Instruments Pt. 2 will be released on January 23 via Warp Records.
