It is no coincidence that David August chose “Ouvert” as the title for his most recent release. The name is taken from an exceptionally complex German card game, Skat, for which there are a multitude of variations and “tricks.” Much like the card game, “Ouvert” is an elaborate amalgamation of sound that twists and turns continuously throughout its duration. Quite a bit more experimental than his last release, the track leads with sonic, 80’s reminiscent synths, then morphs into a rapid-fire percussion before deftly layering in syncopated rhythms and the same jarring, futuristic chords heard in “J.B.Y.”
“Ouvert” is available now, digitally, through Ninja Tune’s Counter Records.
