Manila Killa – Youth ft. Satica (Remix EP)
Steadily making waves on the strength of his singles, remixes, and side-project Hotel Garuda, LA producer Manila Killa has proven himself to be one of the hottest names coming into the second half of 2016. His most recent single, “Youth,” featuring Satica, made quite a stir when it was released on Moving Castle last month, and that momentum looks to continue with the release of a two-track remix EP.
The first reimagining of “Youth” comes courtesy of enigmatic future bass producer K?d, who splits his arrangement between sparse verses, constructed on a thick, full bass line and giving Satica’s vocals room to breathe, and huge choruses full of swells, glitches, and artillery gun percussion. K?d also showcases some solid technical chops with inventive sound design and impressive, stuttering fills.
Trading thundering future bass for a more sedate, yet equally captivating house rendition, fellow LA talent Qrion opts for subtlety and restraint with remarkable results. Melodies and harmonies build and layer on top of each as the song ebbs and flows over a soft, shuffling drum groove. Qrion demonstrates a musicality and natural sense of melody that is far beyond many of her contemporaries; her remix of “Youth” is beautifully emotive and spookily close to perfection.
