Avicii’s ‘Lonely Together’ wins a VMA, while ‘This Is America’ takes several categories — see the 2018 VMA winners
Another year has come and gone for the VMAs, with the late Avicii representing dance music as the winner of Best Dance Video for his Rita Ora collaboration, “Lonely Together.” The single was one of the last he’d released before his untimely passing, and at the time of its release had presented a glimmering sense of excitement over what was to come from the musician. Its accompanying video was equally uplifting. Dance music was low in representation this year, with N.E.R.D and Imagine Dragons — who won Best Editing and Best Rock Video, respectively — as the next closest thing.
Meanwhile, the 2018 VMAs were taken over by three distinctive acts this year. Cardi B smash hit “I Like It” stole Song of the Summer, with the singer’s name appearing on three other awards. Childish Gambino’s commentary-esque piece, “This Is America,” took home three trophies. Finally, the VMAs wouldn’t be complete without offering several awards to hip-hop’s ruling couple, The Carters.
