Premiere: Kora & Wuachuma – Naavi

Hoj and Lee Burridge have picked a fine set of collaborators to help finish Tale + Tone‘s 2018 on a strong note. In Synergy, two pairs of caliber underground talent have fashioned complementary tunes that each pack a delectable melodic punch per the label’s aesthetic. Our focus is on Kora and Wuachuma’s contribution, “Naavi,” which serves to remind us that the two make a seamless pairing.

In a similar vein to their “Nuit D’Afrique” collaboration, the two burgeoning talents base “Naavi” in a tribal foundation, building a mysterious piece around it with choice vocal samples and celestial synth melodies that cut through a dense harmonic layering. The track feels plenty ritualistic, fit for driving a meditative state in its listeners while evoking mental imagery of nights spent dancing in the Tulumian jungle — or, perhaps on an off-grid desert. This sound is clearly one both Kora and Wuachuma have mastered over their tenure in dance.

Fans of Kora in the East Coast will be happy to know the Canadian artist is soon touching down in New York for an open-to-close set in Brooklyn. Purchase tickets to the affair, which commences on the evening of December 8, here.
