Spiderhound lights an experimental ‘Phlame’

For his fifth lap around the electronic release ring in 2021 to date, Spiderhound—known offstage as Sean Naughton—charts a glitchy, downtempo course with textured curves, “Phlame.” Enmeshing spoken verses with a vocal sample and breakbeats, Spiderhound’s follow-up to late April’s “Voices” finds the songwriter/producer/recording and mix engineer—in his own words—sonically chronicling the “burning desire and magnetic connectIon between two people” in a four-minute stretch.

“Phlame” extends the experimental proclivities that have threaded Spiderhound’s musical endeavors. Unfettered by predictability, the cut ensnares as it simultaneously offers streamers a taste of the novel, the fresh. Beyond building on Spiderhound’s two decades of musical experience, “Phlame” deepens the diversity of the beatsmith’s catalog, home to downtempo, glitch, drum ’n’ bass, dubstep, trap, experimental, and even R&B.
